The formal decision to become a Buddhist is marked by the refuge ceremony, in which you take refuge in what are known as the three jewels: the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Sangha. The Refuge Vow entails a public pronouncement of committing to turn away from confused mind, samsara, and commit to following the Buddha as example, the Dharma as the teaching that awakens us from samsara, and standing alongside the Sangha or community of practitioners who are doing the same. It is traditionally understood as proclaiming that you are a Buddhist.

This course explores what it means to take refuge in the three jewels and formally become a Buddhist.  It is essential for those who are preparing to take the refuge vow. It is also open to anyone curious and interested in exploring the topic of refuge, even if not planning on taking the refuge vow.
