Title: Communications & Marketing Coordinator

The Shambhala Meditation Center of Seattle is looking for a Communications and Marketing Coordinator to join a dedicated team of staff and volunteers supporting our organization, our programming, and our community. This person would be responsible for creating and implementing marketing strategies and supporting leadership in fundraising and membership campaigns. The ideal candidate is organized, collaborative, has marketing experience, especially in inclusive and culturally appropriate outreach to diverse communities, and has an interest in meditation and what our center has to offer.

This person reports to the Center Director and works closely with other Center leadership as needed. 

The Seattle Shambhala Meditation Center is a vibrant Buddhist sangha (meditation community) with a warm approach to the study and practice of meditation.  We provide instruction in mindfulness-awareness meditation for beginners and for experienced practitioners, and a variety of evening and weekend programs and group meditation sessions. We are a predominantly white sangha with an explicit focus on increasing the diversity and inclusive practices of the center, and with a range of targeted meditation groups for people who identify as BIPOC, LGBTQIA+, younger meditators, in recovery, families and children, etc. We also are open to people of different cultural backgrounds and languages, regardless of their immigration status. The Shambhala teachings offer a way to extend our personal transformation for the benefit of society as a whole.  We discover the wisdom, sanity and goodness within our seemingly complex and chaotic minds, and the inherent goodness in the world around us. All marketing efforts support this essential purpose of our Center. 


  • Program promotion
    • Works with Director of Practice and Education and other Center leadership to identify and prioritize program promotions
    • Writes, designs, and sends highlight emails for individual programs that are written for a diverse set of stakeholders (e.g., inclusive of BIPOC, LGBTQIA+, and all sangha members or potential participants)
    • Writes and schedules social media posts on Facebook (FB) and Instagram (IG)
    • Creates and monitors FB Paid Ads on Facebook for Business
    • Assists Director of Practice and Education and other Center leadership with writing program page text when appropriate
    • Cultivates consistency across platforms with program images, banners, & posters
  • Quarterly Newsletter (~10-15 hrs per issue)
    • Coordinates process of content determination, creation, and publication
    • Coordinates with volunteer newsletter team writers
    • Writes and edits content / chooses images
    • Mailchimp layout design and implementation
  • Website
    • Maintains website navigation and presentation in alignment with overall branding (imagery and messaging) applied in other platforms such as social media and email outreach
    • Makes website adjustments as needed,including blog posts and creating new pages
    • Coordinates with the volunteer website developer for large website updates 
  • Marketing Upkeep and Growth
    • Maintains and improves existing marketing systems (Shambhala Database & Members List, Mailchimp Mailing List, Social Media follows) 
  • Other
    • Assists leadership in sending community messages via Mailchimp when needed
    • Works with Membership and Development teams to support membership, community, and fundraising efforts
    • Across all responsibilities, applies cultural competence and focus on diversity and inclusion when crafting messaging, selecting imagery, engaging in outreach to target audiences, etc.

Technical Requirements / Skills Needed:

  • Fluency in Google Drive/Docs
  • Proficient writing skills
  • A sense of visual aesthetic
  • Works well with technology; Can troubleshoot technical situations
  • Organized; can create and work within a schedule to self-manage projects
  • A good communicator; responds promptly (within reason) to emails
  • Collaborates well
  • Some experience in marketing is desired but not required
  • Candidate must have their own computer with internet access
  • Experience with HTML and CSS not required, but a plus

Software Used:

Successful candidates will have experience with at least three of the following tools, and demonstrable ability to learn the remaining ones.

  • Shambhala Database
  • WordPress


This is a contractor position with a stipend of $1,000 per month with an estimate of 40 hours per month. Hours may be flexible and work involved may change from month-to-month depending on current offerings.
