Awake in Action Embodies Social Engagement

by Andrea D’Asaro

“I’ve come to serve residents at the Union Hotel each month for seven years, feeling the weight of current events and the difficulties we all face but by the time our work is over, my heart is full and my steps are lighter,” says Sandra Noel, Awake in Action Coordinator and Shambhala member.

“The residents have so little and have suffered so many physical and emotional health issues. It reminds me how we are all human and we all need love and respect and a place to call home.”

“When friends ask us why we keep showing up to help disabled adults, we tell them about creating enlightened society,” says Noel.

AiA offers refreshments and creative craft projects for residents at the long-term residence in Pioneer Square for 52 disabled formerly homeless adults run by the Department of Emergency Services Center. Each winter, we also put on a holiday party for the residents, where they can chose from a wish list so their gifts will be a surprise.

Holiday party volunteers are needed on Sunday, Dec. 17th. To volunteer:

  • Meet: 3:30pm to 4pm at the Union Hotel, 204 3rd Ave S Seattle, 98104
  • Enjoy holiday party with residents, 4pm to 5pm

Volunteers are also needed the last Sunday of each month when the program continues each month. It’s helpful to let Sandra know when you’re coming. To be on her email list for a monthly flyer, contact her at [email protected] or (206) 313-1742.

The program is also seeking financial support for the New Year. Please consider donating in one of the following ways:

  1. Cash: Shambhala Center community room JAM shrine
  2. Check: Write to Seattle Shambhala Center and put AiA in the notes section.
  3. Online donations at Shambhala website: Choose the “AiA” option at seattle.shambhala.org/donate
