Bodhisattva Vow Ceremony
with Acharya Richard John
The prerequisite for taking the bodhisattva vow is having taken the refuge vow at least 6 months prior, and having the approval of a senior meditation instructor. There will be a Bodhisattva Vow Preparatory class on the meaning of the bodhisattva vow on Tuesday evening, September 10 and Sunday morning September 22. The class is not mandatory for taking the bodhisattva vow, but it is highly encouraged.
The bodhisattva vow ceremony may be attended by those who have already taken the vow. They may either witness the vow or retake it. If they wish to retake the vow (which is always appropriate) they do it exactly as if taking it for the first time—reciting the liturgy and offering a bodhisattva gift - except they do not receive a new name.
Everyone taking the vow must have a brief interview with Acharya John in order to receive a vow name. These interviews will be scheduled on Thursday and Friday late afternoons, October 10 and 11. Please contact Heather Crone ([email protected]) or Alison Day ([email protected]) to set up an interview. It is customary to offer a voluntary heart gift to the vow preceptor, usually when you have your interview. (Note: this is separate from the bodhisattva gift which is required.)
An early student of Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche, Acharya Richard John was appointed an acharya by Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche. For many years he has taught Shambhala Buddhist programs in North America, New Zealand, Australia, Mexico and Chile. After careers as a designer and a management consultant, he served as director of the Halifax Shambhala Centre. He completed the first three-year group retreat at Gampo Abbey, and he now teaches full time. Richard and his wife Liz reside in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
If you would like to take the Bodhisattva Vow, please register below and plan to arrive at the center at 5 pm. Ceremony begins at 5:30 but we need vow takers to arrive at 5.
If you have questions regarding how to register, please contact David Tallent [email protected]. For questions about the ceremony and to set up an interview, contact Heather Crone [email protected]. Note: Heather will be out of town Oct. 1-9. During that time contact Alison Day [email protected] regarding questions about the actual ceremony and to schedule your interview appointment.
