Sand Mandala Event on Bainbridge in May

Small-Gaden-Shartse-mandalaA group of 6 monks from Gaden Shartse Monastic College in India are coming to Bainbridge Island May 2-7 to create a sand mandala at the Bainbridge Island Museum of Art.  They will be at the museum, which is a 5-minute walk from the ferry, from 10a-6p every day and till 8p on Friday, May 6th, installing the sand onto the Medicine Buddha mandala design.  On May 7th at 3p, they will have a ceremony to bless the sand, sweep it all up into an urn, walk down to the harbor, and pour the sand into the sea.  It’s pretty amazing that they will be here!

Below is a link to the podcast interview that Channie Peters, a Seattle Shambhala member, did last week with the museum’s events manager and the BI resident who will be hosting the monks while they are here.

The link also contains more details on what happens during  the event and how to get there.  Friday, May 6th is also the monthly Arts Walk evening when the BI museum is open late and many Winslow businesses either feature an art exhibit or are offering small bites on their menus.  All activities are accessible on foot from the Winslow ferry terminal.
